What did you think that I will just post some minimal looking sketches?
Nope, to audit a website, you get a website.
I really hope you like the work I put into.

Sticky Notes UX Audit

A comprehensive analysis of usability issues and redesign proposals for the Sticky Notes desktop application

Overview

Sticky Notes is a lightweight desktop application that allows users to create digital sticky notes on their Windows or macOS desktop. While the app serves its basic purpose well, our UX audit revealed several areas where the user experience could be significantly improved.

Key UX Problems

Through user testing and heuristic evaluation, we identified several critical usability issues:

1. Poor Onboarding

New users receive no guidance on how to use the app. There are no tooltips, walkthroughs, or clear CTAs for key features, leaving users to discover functionality through trial and error.

No guidance

No onboarding guidance visualization

2. Cluttered Note Management

Notes lack organization systems like folders or tags. When multiple notes are open, it becomes difficult to find specific information, especially for power users.

3. Unintuitive Pro Upgrade

The free vs. Pro feature differentiation isn't clear, and upgrade prompts feel disruptive rather than helpful, creating frustration rather than conversion opportunities.

Upgrade Required

4. Weak Visual Hierarchy

Notes blend together due to poor spacing and contrast. There's no clear distinction between active, completed, or archived notes, making the interface visually overwhelming.

Poor visual distinction

5. Limited Customization

While basic color options exist, users can't adjust note sizes, fonts, or create templates for recurring note types, limiting personalization.

Few options

Minimal customization

6. Inconsistent Behavior

Some notes remain on top while others get buried under windows with no predictable pattern, causing confusion about note persistence.

Proposed Solutions

For each identified problem, we developed targeted solutions to improve the user experience:

1. Interactive Onboarding

Implement a minimal, interactive tutorial that highlights key features without being intrusive. Use progressive disclosure to introduce advanced features as users become more comfortable.

2. Enhanced Organization

Introduce folders, tags, and a search function. Allow pinning important notes and provide multiple viewing modes (grid, list, stack).

3. Contextual Upgrades

Clearly differentiate free and Pro features in a comparison table. Use contextual upsells when users attempt Pro features (e.g., "Unlock reminders for this note").

4. Improved Visual Design

Redesign note cards with better spacing, shadows, and status indicators. Implement a color-coding system and visual differentiation for note types.

Design Process

Our redesign followed a structured UX design process to ensure all changes were user-centered and validated:

1

Research

Conducted user interviews with current Sticky Notes users to understand pain points. Performed competitive analysis of similar apps (Microsoft Sticky Notes, Google Keep). Analyzed app store reviews for common complaints.

User Research

2

Ideation

Brainstormed solutions through sketching and whiteboarding sessions. Created user flows for key tasks like note creation and organization. Developed personas representing different user types.

Ideation Sessions

3

Wireframing

Created low-fidelity wireframes for all key screens and interactions. Focused on information architecture and layout before visual design. Tested wireframes with users for feedback.

4

Prototyping

Developed interactive prototypes in Figma to test the proposed solutions. Included micro-interactions and transitions to evaluate the feel of the UI. Conducted usability tests with 15 participants.

5

Testing & Iteration

Gathered quantitative data through task completion rates and qualitative feedback via interviews. Identified pain points in the new designs and iterated based on findings. Finalized designs for development handoff.
